PHILADELPHIA, PA--(Marketwire - February 28, 2011) - When Ted Eisenberg announced that he had set a Guinness World Record, his friends and family assumed it was related to his hobby: knife throwing. It wasn't.
Dr. Eisenberg, a Philadelphia plastic and reconstructive surgeon, set a record for "the most breast augmentation surgeries performed in a lifetime (male) -- 3460."
"I never imagined being in the Guinness Book of World Records until I participated in a knife-throwing tournament at the Annie Oakley Festival in Greenville, OH," Dr. Eisenberg says. "My knife-throwing buddy and I were watching Robert Dante, a Guinness record holder, try to set a new record for the most bullwhip cracks in one-minute. My buddy turned to me and asked if I had done more breast augmentation surgeries than anyone else. So I checked with Guinness and discovered that I had set a record."
After devoting the first half of his career to performing plastic and reconstructive surgery from head to toe, Dr. Eisenberg decided in 1999 to focus his practice exclusively on cosmetic breast surgery -- one of the few plastic surgeons in the country to do so. This concentration resulted in thousands of cases and a wealth of experience. "This experience has given me the opportunity to provide the best care for my patients," Dr. Eisenberg says.
In 2008, Dr. Eisenberg took up knife throwing -- a longtime desire inspired by movies like Crocodile Dundee. "I had used knives in the OR, but hadn't ever thrown one," he jokes. Joe Darrah, a suburban Philadelphia knife maker and seven-time world champion tomahawk thrower, mentored him -- a residency of sorts.
Since then, Eisenberg has competed in several tournaments, including the International Knife Throwers Hall of Fame World Championships in Texas. He used regulation 12-inch-long balanced knives made of steel, not scalpels. But he does own an engraved throwing scalpel that Darrah crafted for him.
"My work spills into my hobby, and my hobby spills into my work," he explains. "In the OR, I'm super-observant, and I bring that focus to my knife throwing. Then there's the Zen of throwing over and over. When I'm practicing, I feel calm and serene. I think I'm better in the OR because of that."
Eisenberg was delighted when he received his official Guinness World Record certificate. "It's like getting a trophy when you're a kid, and it impressed my family and friends. But what's important to me is what it represents: that thousands of women have trusted me to help them look natural, feel wonderful and have the body they've dreamed of."
