2012 Summer Program Season Announced
PHILADELPHIA, PA--(Marketwire - May 1, 2012) - The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation sets sail with a summer season schedule of events from May through September, including outstanding free concerts, eleven different multicultural festivals, large screen outdoor movies, fabulous fireworks displays, signature family programming and marquee talent. This season also offers spectacular concerts on the RiverStage at Penn's Landing featuring smooth jazz, gospel, doo wop, another Free Philadelphia Orchestra Neighborhood concert, and the return of the Global Fusion Festival and the WHYY Connections Festival, which has expanded to a week-long schedule. The 2012 Summer Program season will also include programming, events and activities on Race Street Pier which will include a series called First Friday, Park After Dark which will be held on the first Friday on each month in connection with the Old City First Friday celebrations. PECO MULTICULTURAL SERIES
The annual PECO Multicultural Series offers rich cultural outings with the chance to explore the world right here in Philadelphia. These festivals celebrate the diverse ethnic heritage that makes our city great. Admission is FREE for all PECO Multicultural Series events. SCREENINGS UNDER THE STARS
The FREE outdoor film series, Screenings Under the Stars, continues to delight movie lovers this summer. Seeing a spectacular film on the waterfront under the stars is the perfect family outing or a unique and memorable summer date. Plan a dinner-and-a-movie night by visiting one of the many restaurants on South Street or in Old City, both just a short walk from Penn's Landing.
Screenings Under the Stars is held every Thursday night in July and August. All screenings will begin at dusk or approximately 8:30 p.m. in July and 8:00 p.m. in August at the Great Plaza at Penn's Landing, located on Columbus Boulevard at Chestnut Street. The screenings are sponsored by media partners NBC 10 and B101.1 FM. As with all events at Penn's Landing, the screening is FREE. PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA NEIGHBORHOOD CONCERT AT PENN'S LANDING
The Philadelphia Orchestra returns for the fifth time to the RiverStage at the Great Plaza at Penn's Landing on Friday, July 27, at 8:00 PM for a FREE Neighborhood Concert, sponsored by Wells Fargo. Philadelphia Orchestra Assistant Conductor Cristian Macelaru and the Orchestra perform a festive summertime program. The 2012 Neighborhood Concert Series continues The Philadelphia Orchestra's commitment to celebrating the vitality of neighborhoods throughout the Philadelphia region, bringing the Orchestra and the gift of music into communities in a variety of settings, and introducing the world renowned ensemble to new audiences.
Friday Night Lights
Visitors to Penn's Landing this summer will have more opportunities to enjoy fireworks than ever before! In addition to the traditional display the Saturday prior to the July 4th celebration (this year will be Saturday, June 30th during Taste of Philadelphia). The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation will be presenting FREE fireworks on six consecutive Fridays debuting Friday, July 27th through Friday, August 31st. The fireworks will begin at 9:15 p.m. and be launched landside from the quay in the Penn's Landing Marina, near the new RiverStage at Penn's Landing. The Friday Light Lights displays will be a chance to experience fireworks in a more intimate way, providing a perfect end (or start) to a summer evening on the waterfront.
SMOOTH JAZZ SUMMER NIGHTS
This August will mark the 15th season for the Smooth Jazz Summer Nights Concert Series on the RiverStage at the Great Plaza at Penn's Landing. This year's series will be a celebration of women in music. Oleta Adams, Patrice Rushen and Sheila E are a few of the exciting performers of this year's series which promises to be one of the most captivating and musically exhilarating concert events of the summer. Smooth Jazz aficionados will enjoy Smooth Jazz Summer Nights concerts every Friday night in August beginning at 7:30 pm. SOUNDS OF GOSPEL CONCERT
Inspiring and uplifting music comes to the waterfront when the "Sounds of Gospel Concert" takes place on Saturday, August 25 from 3:00-9:00 p.m. on the RiverStage at Penn's Landing. This year features Stellar, Dove and Grammy award winning recording artist Israel Houghton as well as local artists, the Bryant Pugh and Treena Ferebee. This year will include a new partnership with Praise 103.9 and Radio One in which they will search for an inspirational artist to open this concert.
PHILADELPHIA DOO WOP FESTIVAL
In the mid 1950s, the Doo Wop music scene thrived in the streets of Philadelphia. Talented city youth used their own instruments -- their voices -- to make music, and their playful yet passionate style delivered some of the most popular hits of its time. On Sunday, September 9th, from 12:00-6:00 p.m., as part of the WHYY Connections Festival, celebrate this classic genre in its birthplace at the Philadelphia Doo Wop Festival. The concert will be held on the RiverStage at Penn's Landing, and offers the rare opportunity to hear some of the greatest names in Doo Wop for FREE during this fabulous event produced by the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service Education Center.
WHYY Connections Festival
Starting Sunday, September 2 on the Camden Waterfront, this week long festival, hosted by WHYY, features live music, film, live performances, kids activities' and more. Past headliners included Dr. Dog and the Baseball Project while this year's event will include First Friday on the Race Street Pier on Friday, September 7, a live concert on the RiverStage at the Great Plaza on Saturday, September 8th, and the Philadelphia Doo Wop Festival on Sunday, September 9th, and more!
