PHILADELPHIA, PA--(Marketwire - May 1, 2012) - Located at the end of Race Street along the water's edge, Race Street Pier features a combination of interesting landscape architecture and a dramatic setting that offers spectacular views of the waterfront. Visitors can walk along the tree-lined paths and relax in the grassy areas while enjoying amazing views of the Ben Franklin Bridge, Center City, and the Delaware River from a totally new vantage point. This season will feature a series of programs and activities, designed to introduce new visitors to the Pier, and to provide entertainment for people who enjoy the park regularly.
The Race Street Pier is an integral part of a series of open space improvements proposed every half-mile along the Central Delaware as part of the new Master Plan. Since its opening in May 2011, the Race Street Pier has become an award-winning, nationally acclaimed park and a great new waterfront destination.
The Race Street Pier program schedule will include a series called Park After Dark, to coincide with the First Friday activities in Old City. Hosted by the Friends of Race Street Pier, visitors can explore the galleries in Old City and then take a stroll down Race Street, utilize the Race Street Connector, and celebrate First Friday with live entertainment on the First Friday of each month (May through September) from 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. The First Friday Park After Dark on May 4th will be a teaser event for the Art Star Craft Bazaar and will feature a craft marketplace, great food, and live entertainment by the Olive Juice Band.
The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation and event co-chairs Diane Dalto Woosnam and Ellen Yin will host the second annual Race Street Pier Promenade on Thursday, June 7th from 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Funds raised from this special event will support arts programming that will enliven the waterfront and animate Race Street Pier. The event features fare from local restaurants coordinated by Ellen Yin, owner and Terence Feury, executive chef of Fork Restaurant, as well as cocktails, music, and entertainment.
In addition, the new programming schedule on the Race Street Pier will feature public art and craft shows, yoga, unplugged musicians, strolling performers and a monthly series of screenings of 16 mm classic and art house films. Highlights include:
- Memorial Day Weekend, May 26th and May 27th, Raices Culturales Latinoamericanas will present "Strong Roots: A Latin Arts Explosion" featuring live musical performances by Johnny Cruz's Latin Jazz Ensemble, Zumba exercise sessions, cultural crafts, spoken word performances, and children's activities from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- On June 10th and 24th, Spiral Q Puppet Theater will bring their special brand of merrymaking to the Race Street Pier with puppet crafts and parades around the pier from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
- On July 7th and 21st, Grupo Fuego will conduct free salsa dance lessons from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
During programs and events, visitors will be able to find food concessions and a variety of food trucks including Rival Brothers and Sweetbox Cupcakes parked on select weekends just outside the Pier.
"We look forward to sharing an amazing & spirited weekend with all of Philadelphia! We welcome everyone to join us on Memorial's Day Weekend for the STRONG ROOTS: Latin Arts Explosion for an afternoon of fun, culture, and community!" said Verónica Castillo-Pérez, Executive Director, Raíces Culturales Latinoamericanas
