SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - May 2, 2012) - In a report in African Business Review, CEO Alan Harper discusses the rapid growth of telecommunications specialist Eaton Towers as well as the company's ambitious plans for the future.
When Eaton Towers formed, it was one of the first companies to focus on and develop the shared telecommunications tower industry in Africa as an independent and neutral manager. The endeavour was the brainchild of three executives who together have more than 30 years worth of experience in the African telecommunications sector.
The company's founder and Chairman, Sanjiv Ahuja, is the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Orange, and Terry Rhodes, co-founder and Director, was a co-founder of Celtel. Meanwhile Eaton's CEO, Alan Harper, has previously been a member of the executive board at Vodafone.
"We decided to do this in Africa because we were all executives out of the mobile industry and when we looked at the African market we realised the tower sharing business hadn't really been developed," Harper explains. "So what we do is we either buy or build towers and then rent out the space on those towers to mobile operators and other customers who need a mounted radio antenna."
For the first 12 to 18 months that followed inception, Eaton Towers was very much in business development mode. The company made its first deal in Ghana towards the end of 2010 and has since set up operations in South Africa and very recently, Uganda.
