The Bulahdelah's Resource Recovery and Waste Transfer Station's Focus on Sustainability, Service and Safety Manages Waste Proactively
SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - May 3, 2012) - In an interview with Business Review Australia, Manager of Waste, Health and Regulatory Services for the Great Lakes Council describes how when the Bulahdelah Landfill reached capacity in Bulahdelah, New South Wales, the Great Lakes Council had to strategise an original and effective way to handle their town's waste. The council's newly honed focus centered around one question. How could they best manage their waste, with minimal hazard done to the public and environment? What they came up with not only solved their problems, it offered an innovative and unique solution to waste management that had not yet been witnessed in New South Wales.
John Cavanagh, the Manager of Waste, Health and Regulatory Services for the Great Lakes Council, describes the centre's waste management goals. "I started with the council as the first officer dedicated to improve waste management in 1995. I was the only person at the time. Back then the landfills were not secured, there were no fees charged. And a lot of them were just dumps. My role was to actually improve the environmental outcomes, and the services that were provided to the rate payers," he says.
The Bulahdelah Resource Recovery and Waste Transfer station stemmed from that initial vision. "This transfer station structure offers us the greatest value for money to reduce, reuse and recycle and divert waste to another centre," Mr. Cavanagh says.

About Bulahdelah Resource Recovery and Waste Transfer Station
The Bulahdelah Resource Recovery and Waste Transfer Station is the first of three transfer stations, built as a part of a broader strategy and infrastructure. The overall initiative provides a range of suitable waste collection services throughout the local government area which relevantly address resource conservation, while managing resident waste streams. The station specifically processes the waste stream from Bulahdelah residents, removing items which can be recycled or reused, and transferring the remaining waste to the Tuncurry Waste Management Centre in Tuncurry, NSW.
