Father-Son Promise to Finally be Honoured After 35 Years in Upcoming St. Albert Marathon

FOR: LEADING EDGE RUNWILD MARATHON

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - May 4, 2012) - As the 2nd Annual Leading Edge RunWild Marathon draws near, a feel good story has emerged. St. Albert resident, Wylde Parnelle is running the marathon to honour an unfulfilled promise he made to his father 35 years ago.

"I was supposed to run a full marathon with my father when I was 15," said Parnelle. "He ran it alone and I have regretted not running with him ever since."

Parnelle's father, now 71, lives in Ontario and plans on flying to Edmonton to attend the marathon event.

"We have communicated with Wylde a few times now," said Race Director Anita Cassidy. "I know he is really excited for his father to be at the race and see him as he crosses the finish line. I'm sure it will be a proud and emotional moment for them both."

Cassidy often hears touching stories from RunWild's participants. From participants who have overcome weight challenges to those who have beaten cancer, the race is often more than 'just a race.' As Cassidy explains, for many it's about overcoming personal challenges in their lives.

Fittingly, RunWild organizers have decided to make the moment more special for the Parnelles, as Wylde will be awarded bib number 775, the same number his father wore when he ran the one and only marathon of his life in 1977.

"While customizing bibs is not something we do very often, when I heard of Wylde's story, it just made sense. Awarding him bib 775 was the least we could do for someone who is as engaged in the race as Wylde. He is the epitome of what RunWild is all about," said Cassidy.

Out of the 6 half marathons Parnelle has completed, he believes RunWild is the most well organized. "From the water stations and route markings to the race Marshalls and friendly volunteers; it's an amazing event," said Parnelle.

And with an ironic name like Wylde, who could disagree?
